School District 8 - FAQ

Inclement Weather

Q: What is District 8's policy regarding school closure due to inclement weather?

A:The following options are considered when deciding what to do during inclement weather situations:

  1. Schools are open as usual in which case no radio announcement will be made.
  2. Schools are closed for the day with an appropriate announcement being relayed to radio stations prior to 6:30 a.m. for broadcast. Parents are urged to listen to the radio early in the morning on days when the weather is inclement.
  3. Some schools in the district are closed in which case the appropriate announcements will be made via the radio stations as outlined above.
  4. Buses are delayed one hour, with all schools in District 8 opening at their regular time to receive students.

If schools remain open, and you as a parent find that conditions in your area are not conducive to your child going to school, then ultimately you have the final decision whether or not to send your child to school, either walking or on the bus. Absences on these days will not be a factor in a student's attendance record.

Special Education

Q: How can my child receive the help of a Teacher Assistant?

A: Teacher Assistants are employed by the school district and assigned to schools in order to lend assistance to classroom teachers, usually as a result of the inclusion of children that have been deemed exceptional according to Section 12 of the Education Act. Teacher Assistants are assigned to teachers to assist them in completing the various non-teaching duties they are required to complete each day. Teacher Assistants are not to be viewed as an individual attendant for a specific child and are unable to offer academic support.

Q: How can my child receive help from a Resource Teacher?

A: Each school in District 8 has at least one resource teacher that offers services to both the students and the teachers. The service to the student includes one on one direct instruction for short periods of time and being a member of the team that develops and implements a Special Education Plan. The service to the teachers in the building is consultation on exceptionalities and on making modifications/accommodations to a student's educational program. Each of the resource teachers carry a very heavy case load and it may not be possible to work with every student referred to them. If you believe that your child has a learning difficulty and may benefit from the services of a resource teacher, call the school and ask for an appointment to discuss your concerns. The resource teacher may be able to make suggestions that will address the concerns.

Q: What is the policy with regard to inclusion?

A: The province of New Brunswick has a policy of inclusionary education for all students. This means that under to Section 12 of the Education Act all students that have been deemed exceptional shall receive Special Education Programs, and services shall be provided so the exceptional student can participate with students not deemed as exceptional in regular classroom settings.
