Reports:
What
is a District Education Council (DEC)?
Your DEC is
a local decision-making council, which includes 13 elected
members of the communities that comprise District 8. Members are
publicly
elected in conjunction with municipal elections. As a body corporate,
each
DEC has been given certain rights and responsibilities under the
Education
Act enabling it to play a vital role in the delivery and quality
of
education in District 8.
Your DEC will
work under a policy governance model to establish the
direction and priorities for District 8 and make decisions as
to how the
district and schools should be operated. Your DEC will have broad
policy and
planning responsibilities, and will be ultimately responsible
to the
community for the performance of schools in the district and for
meeting
provincial standards.
To make sure
that all areas of District 8 are represented on the DEC, the
district has been divided into 13 subdistricts. Each subdistrict
has one
representative on the DEC.
